The year 1864 is the dividing line in this family’s Irish paper trail. Civil registration began in 1845 for non-Catholic and civil marriages, but from 1 January 1864 the law required registration of all births, deaths and marriages. That is why Catherine Condon’s 1874 birth can appear as a government register image while an ancestor born in the 1830s may survive only in a parish book—or nowhere at all. A birth register page is a contemporary form, not a modern family-tree summary. Read across the row. It normally gives the date and place of birth; the child’s name and sex; the father’s name, residence and occupation; the mother’s name; the informant’s name, qualification and residence; and the registration date. “Qualification” means the informant’s authority to report the event: father, mother, occupier of the house, or a person present at the birth. A mark instead of a signature means the informant did not sign their name; it should not be embellished into a broader claim about intelligence or daily life.
“Mary Condon formerly Ryan” means that Ryan was Mary’s surname before marriage. It is the registrar’s way of identifying the mother by both married and birth surnames. It does not mean “previously married to a Ryan.” In this family, that phrase repeated across several children is powerful evidence that the registrations belong to one Patrick Condon–Mary Ryan household. Spelling still varies: Coony/Cooney and Needhan/Needham can refer to the same recorded couple when dates, places and relationships align.
Marriage rows carry a different set of clues: age or “full age,” marital condition, occupation, residence, each father’s name and occupation, the place of marriage, and witnesses. They usually do not name the mothers. Death rows give age, occupation, cause and duration of death, and an informant, but historically did not always state parents.
Registration geography causes many false “missing record” problems. The system reused Poor Law Unions as Superintendent Registrar’s Districts, with smaller registrar’s districts inside them; boundaries did not necessarily follow county lines. The Condon children show why this matters. Early births were found under Fermoy, but Catherine, James and Mary were registered under Mitchelstown after the household reached Flemingstown. Searching only Fermoy made them look absent. Likewise, the Islandeady family is indexed under Westport, not Castlebar. A district name identifies the registration system that received the event; it is not necessarily the townland where the family lived.
