The dress and the photographic style put this in the 1930s, which fits Dennis C. Leahey, born 1867, and rules out his father Captain Dennis, who died in 1907. The identification comes from the family rather than from anything written on the print. The newspaper printed a portrait captioned DENNIS C. LEAHEY at his death, and the two faces can be compared: that comparison would turn a family attribution into a documented one, and has not yet been made.

Neither man is identified. The uniform — jumper, neckerchief, white cap, bell-bottoms — was worn in that pattern from the 1910s to the 1940s, so it does not date the picture on its own. A young sailor photographed with a much older man at home is the ordinary grandson-and-grandfather snapshot, and the elderly man's white moustache is consistent with the newspaper portrait of Dennis C. Leahey, but that is a resemblance and not an identification. It is published here in the hope that someone recognises the porch or the face.

Dennis C. Leahey, a Bayonne resident for over 80 years, died yesterday at his home, 21 George Street. Mr. Leahey, who was born in Syracuse, N. Y., was [remainder of paragraph destroyed]. He is survived by his wife, Ellen; five daughters, Mrs. Catherine Roenbeck, Mrs. Dora Wilson, Mrs. Stella Pylkowski, Mrs. Helen Hazelton and Mrs. Anne Wallace, all of Bayonne; a son, Matthew Leahey of Bayonne; a brother, Malachy Leahey, also of this city; 27 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. James Leahey, of 135 W. 9th St., a Bayonne resident for the past 70 years, died yesterday at his home after a short illness. Mr. Leahey was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church and a member of the Bayonne Exempt Firemen's Association. He was born in Syracuse, N. Y. The husband of the late Mary Mullins, he is survived by three sons, James, Jr., John and Fire Capt. William Leahey;Show the full recordHide the full recordFull record, about 150 words
four daughters, the Misses Agnes, Dorothy and Anna and Mrs. Edwin Hendrickson; three brothers, Dennis, Malachi and Peter; a sister, Miss Catherine Leahey, and a grandchild. The funeral will be held Monday morning from the home, and a solemn high requiem mass will be offered at 10 o'clock in St. Mary's Church. Interment will be in Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.

- [CONFLICT] The exact notices establish that Ellen died on 15 July 1952 and Dennis on 22 September 1957. Dennis’s separate news obituary nevertheless says he was survived by wife Ellen; retain that wording as an apparent newspaper error rather than overwriting it.
- Compare the family-attributed photograph in dennisleahey.jpg with the newspaper portrait captioned ‘DENNIS C. LEAHEY’ before treating the photograph’s identification as documented.
- [CONFLICT] A two-storey frame dwelling appears at 21 George Street on the 1912 Sanborn map, while a compiled current page says the present two-storey house was built in 1920. Do not assume survival or replacement.
- [CONFLICT] **His own headstone is cut DENNIS C. 1866 — 1957.** This archive holds a compiled birth of about 1867. A monument is not automatically right — it was cut by the living, from memory, possibly decades after the fact — but it is the family's own statement in stone, and both readings now stand.
