Leahy worked in Bayonne harbor trades: the 1918 directory called him “boatmn,” the 1922–1923 directory called him “lab,” and his later notice called him a retired barge captain of the New Jersey Derby Company. The employer name is documented, but the company’s business type, legal identity, dates, principals, docks, barges and cargoes remain unidentified. Volunteer memorials document a first marriage to Catherine Agnes Tobin in 1898 and place him at depth 1E of the F-E-33 grave with Catherine (1A), daughter Helen (1B), daughter Mary (1C), and second wife Margaret (1D).

Clergymen from as far away as Texas and Italy attend a solemn mass of requiem offered yesterday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church for Malachy J. Leahy, who died suddenly at Bayonne Hospital on Monday. Celebrant of the mass was the Rev. Celestine Leahy, S.A., a son of Mr. Leahy stationed in Rome, Italy. Mr. Leahy, who was 88 years old, had been a resident of Bayonne since his family moved here from Syracuse, N.Y., in 1880. He was the last of the 18 children of Dennis and Ann Galvin Leahy, who came to the United States from Ireland over 100 years ago.

Malachy J. Leahy of 313 Avenue C died suddenly yesterday at Bayonne Hospital. Mr. Leahy was a retired barge captain of the New Jersey Derby Company. Born in Weehawken, he attended St. Mary's parochial school in Bayonne where he lived for 80 years. Mr. Leahy was the husband of the late Margaret Murphy Leahy. He is survived by three sons, John of the Boulevard Police Department; the Rev. Celestine Leahy, S. A., of the Graymoor Friars, who has been stationed in Rome for the past four years; Malachy Jr., and two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Ryan, and Miss Margaret Leahy. Also surviving Mr. Leahy are 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Interment will follow in Holy Name Cemetery.

James Leahey, of 135 W. 9th St., a Bayonne resident for the past 70 years, died yesterday at his home after a short illness. Mr. Leahey was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church and a member of the Bayonne Exempt Firemen's Association. He was born in Syracuse, N. Y. four daughters, the Misses Agnes, Dorothy and Anna and Mrs. Edwin Hendrickson; three brothers, Dennis, Malachi and Peter; a sister, Miss Catherine Leahey, and a grandchild. The funeral will be held Monday morning from the home, and a solemn high requiem mass will be offered at 10 o'clock in St. Mary's Church. Interment will be in Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.

- The age-at-death calculation implies birth about 1872, while volunteer Find a Grave family links type 1870–1960. Confirm both dates from civil or cemetery records.
- The funeral account says the family moved to Bayonne from Syracuse in 1880, but Malachy’s own notice says he was born in Weehawken and the 1880 census places the family in Jersey City. Treat the reported route and year as approximate until records establish the sequence.
- [CONFLICT] The 1880 federal card says New York, while Malachy’s death notice says Weehawken, New Jersey. Neither birthplace has been overwritten; obtain a baptism or civil birth record.
- [OPEN] The New Jersey Derby Company remains unidentified. The death notice proves only the employer name and Malachy’s role; its legal name, business type, dates, principals, docks, barges and cargoes are unproved. Exact-name searches in the fetched 1918 and 1922–1923 directory OCR found no company entry.
- [FALSE LEAD] “P. Derby & Co.” of Manhattan was explicitly a chair concern and must never be merged with the unidentified New Jersey Derby Company.
