Born at Cahirtrant in the parish of Ventry, County Kerry, on 10 November 1895, the son of John Fitzgerald, a farmer of Cahirtrant, and Bridget Fitzgerald, whose maiden name was also Fitzgerald. His father registered the birth five days later and could not write, making a cross where his signature belonged.
