Life

Bridget Fitzgerald was born in County Kerry about 1860–1861, although no baptism or civil birth record in this archive establishes an exact date. Her 1889 marriage record names her father as Patrick Fitzgerald, a farmer. Our family tree calls her "Brigid Long," but the civil record identifies her before and after marriage as Fitzgerald, so the Long surname is not accepted as established.

Bridget married John Fitzgerald on 12 February 1889 in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Ventry, in the Dingle registration district. The record describes her as a full-age spinster and John as a full-age bachelor and farmer of Caheratrant. It names their fathers as Patrick Fitzgerald and Maurice Fitzgerald, both farmers.

In 1901 Bridget was living at house 7 in Caheratrant. The census recorded her as a 40-year-old Roman Catholic, the head of household's "Daughter in Law," born in County Kerry and able to speak "Irish and English." It also said that she "Cannot read." By 1911 she was at house 5 in the same townland, listed as the farmer's "Wife." That schedule said "Read and write," recorded 22 years of marriage, and stated that all three of her children were living.

The three children identified in this archive are Patrick, John, and Mary Fitzgerald. Patrick's civil birth entry gives "Tenth November 1895, Cahirtrant" and names "Bridget Fitzgerald formerly Fitzgerald" as his mother and John Fitzgerald, farmer, as his father.

Bridget's death has not been found. Her exact birth, the unexplained Long surname in our family tree, and civil birth records for John and Mary remain unresolved.

Bridget lived in the Irish-speaking farming household at Caheratrant, first as “Daughter in Law” under widowed farmer Maurice’s roof and by 1911 as the farmer’s “Wife”. Across those ten years her entry changed from “Cannot read” to “Read and write,” while the later schedule recorded “children_born”:3 and “children_living”:3. [4]

Recorded aged 40 in 1901 and 50 in 1911 at Caheratrant, implying a birth about 1861. Irish ages in 1911 are often inflated because of the 1908 pension act, but hers moves by exactly ten years across the two returns, which is the pattern of a woman who knew her age.
