John Joseph Hickey
This entry is about John Joseph Hickey (about 1836 – 18 July 1906). For other family members with the same first and family name, see John Hickey (4 August 1866 – 4 December 1955), John Hickey (4 October 1896 – 1966), John Joseph Hickey (20 January 1890 – 25 May 1975), John Thomas Hickey (about 1898 – 1971).
about 1836 – 18 July 1906
John Hickey was born at Limerick Junction, County Tipperary, on 11 March 1827, the son of William Hickey and Mary Grady, and came out to Queensland with his family. In 1860 he married Ellen Condon, and nine of their children are recorded, born between 1861 and 1877. She died in 1882, aged about forty-two; he outlived her by twenty-four years and died at Dinmore, near Ipswich, on 18 July 1906, aged 79. He is the man who carries this branch from Ireland to Australia, and his birthplace is the only precise Irish address the Queensland line has.
Partly proved
John Hickey died at Ipswich on 18 July 1906; a cemetery inscription names his wife as Ellen Condon and his mother as May Hickey.

Life
John Hickey died on 18 July 1906 and was buried at Ipswich Cemetery, Queensland. A FamilySearch entry from Australia, Cemetery Inscriptions, 1802–2005 records him as age 70, for an estimated birth year of 1836, and names his mother as May Hickey and spouse as “ELLEN CONDON.” This is the first Australian source in the archive to give his wife’s maiden name. The middle name “Joseph” and the different 1827 birth year still come from our family tree rather than this inscription.
The inscription changes the Queensland branch from unnamed and unconnected to named and now testable. It proves that John’s wife was named Ellen Condon. It does not prove that she was the Ellen Condon of Castlelyons, County Cork, or a sister of Patrick Condon. Condon is a common Irish surname, and the inscription gives no Irish birthplace. The proposed connection to the documented Cork family must therefore remain unproved.
The City of Ipswich cemetery result independently reads, "John Hickey | Died 18 Jul 1906." A Queensland probate index records "Last name: HICKEY," "Given names: John," "Will no: 285," "Year: 1906," and "District: Southern." It identifies the file as QSA reference SCT/P621, item ITM2814986. The cemetery inscription’s exact death date corroborates the date attached to that probate file.
A newspaper reported that a magistrate inquired into the circumstances of the death. Constable Webb "found deceased dead on the bed at his residence" and said John "had been suffering for the past two years from dropsy." Robert Jarvis, described as his son-in-law, also gave evidence. Despite the formal word inquiry, the report points plainly to a death after prolonged illness and reports no foul play, workplace injury, train, or mining accident.
The tree assigns nine children to John and Ellen: William, Mary Ann, Margaret Ellen, John, Patrick, Johanna, Catherine, Bridget, and Thomas James Hickey. The inscription does not name them. A separate Ipswich cemetery record for Ellen Hickey, aged 40, who died on 24 August 1882 cannot yet be identified as this Ellen Condon. No record found so far connects John with Joseph Hickey, the sponsor named in an 1884 Bayonne baptism.
How we know this: The cemetery inscription documents John’s 1906 death, burial, wife’s name Ellen Condon, and mother May Hickey; the matching probate date and contemporary newspaper corroborate his death. His Irish origin, middle name, wife’s exact identity, and children remain unresolved. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Timeline
Born
Our family tree supplies the middle name Joseph, the 1827 birth, and the older Hickey child group; those claims remain unproved. A later cemetery inscription independently names his wife as Ellen Condon and estimates his birth year as 1836. [3]

Estimated birth year in cemetery inscription
The FamilySearch cemetery-inscription entry records John Hickey as age 70 at death in 1906, giving an estimated birth year of 1836. This conflicts with the family tree’s unsupported 1827 year. [5]

Died
He left a will administered in Queensland’s Southern District; the index supplies archival reference SCT/P621 and item ITM2814986. A cemetery inscription independently gives the same death date and names his wife as Ellen Condon and mother as May Hickey. “Joseph,” the reported children, and any connection to Castlelyons still await proof. Magisterial inquiry reported
A newspaper reported an inquiry into John Hickey’s death. Constable Webb “found deceased dead on the bed at his residence”; John “had been suffering for the past two years from dropsy.” The report describes a death after long illness, not foul play or an occupational accident. [4]

What we still don't know
- Which Irish Ellen Condon became his wife; the inscription does not connect her to Castlelyons or Patrick Condon
- Whether the probate and death records name the reported children
- Whether Joseph was part of his name
- Whether the Ellen Hickey who died in 1882 was his wife
- His birthplace and occupation
- Order or inspect the catalogued but undigitised Queensland probate file SCT/P621, item ITM2814986; its contents may identify Ellen Condon and the reported children.
- [HIS PARENTS ARE NO LONGER A GUESS — 10 August 2026] This page carried William Hickey and Mary Grady as his parents with the link marked unproven, and seventy-seven people descend through it. It was one of the two largest unverified joins in the archive. The Queensland death index settles it. Registration 1906/C/2799 gives: Death registration: John Hickey | Death date: 18/07/1906 | Mother's name: May Grady | Father/parent's name: William Hickey. The death date matches this archive's to the day. The link is upgraded from unproven to documented. Two honest caveats. This is the free index, not the certificate — the image costs AUD 26.40 and would add the informant, the cause and his age. And the registry writes his mother as May, where this archive holds Mary; the two are the same name in ordinary Irish use and both are now attested, but the registry's form is May.
- The wife is now named as Ellen Condon, but the inscription gives no Irish birthplace. Obtain the Queensland death registration, marriage record, and probate file ITM2814986 to test her origins and the reported children; do not equate her with Patrick Condon’s Castlelyons family on surname alone.
- Compare the 1882 Ellen Hickey burial with a death certificate before merging her. No record found so far connects John to Joseph Hickey, the 1884 Bayonne baptism sponsor.
- The ship and the year he came out. He was born in Tipperary in 1827 and married in Queensland in 1860, so the crossing falls somewhere in those thirty-three years, most likely with his parents.
- [MERGED 7 August 2026] This person had been entered twice — as `john-joseph-hickey-1827` and as `john-hickey-1827` — when the Queensland families were built out from Find a Grave without first checking the names already in the archive. The two records are one person and are now joined; the old address redirects.
- [CONTROLLED NEGATIVE] With the parish registers searchable, his baptism was looked for — a John Hickey of about 1827 to a William Hickey and a Mary Grady. Nothing in Ireland. The register set that covers Cork and Kerry does not appear to reach Limerick Junction in Tipperary, or does not reach back to 1827 there. His link to William and Mary carries seventy-seven people and remains the largest unchecked one in the archive.
- [CONTROLLED NEGATIVE — AND IT DEFINES THE LIMIT FOR 154 PEOPLE] Australian death certificates name both parents, including the mother's maiden name, which would settle this link at a stroke. FamilySearch does not have them. What it holds for Queensland is a cemetery index — a name and a burial year and nothing else — and an immigration index. Searched for Ellen Condon and for William and John Hickey: every hit is a bare index line. The certificates themselves are at the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, whose historical search this archive has already recorded as needing a person at a keyboard. Seventy-seven people hang below Ellen Condon and seventy-seven below John Joseph Hickey, and one Queensland death certificate each would document both.
