Margaret Ellen Hickey was born at Ipswich, Queensland, on 18 May 1864, a daughter of John Hickey of Limerick Junction and Ellen Condon. In 1887 she married James McGuire and they had eight children between 1887 and 1904. She died at Walloon — the village she and her brother William were born in — on 17 June 1928, aged sixty-four, and is buried at Ipswich General Cemetery. Every one of her eight children reached adulthood, and one of them, Catherine, lived to be a hundred.

Margaret Ellen Hickey is independently visible under the married surname McGuire in the City of Ipswich cemetery database. Its concise entry reads: "Margaret Ellen McGuire | Died 17 Jun 1928." A later death notice says: "On June 17, at her residence, William-street, Ellen McGuire, age 64 years. R.I.P."

Two funeral notices published the day after her death add a family network. One invited "Mr. and Mrs. JOHN McGUIRE, Mr. and Mrs. P. McGUIRE, Mr. and Mrs. CHURCHITT, Mr. and Mrs. J. WYATTE, Mr. and Mrs. W. BELL, Mr. W. McGUIRE, and Misses NELLIE and MARY McGUIRE" to the funeral of their mother and mother-in-law. Funeral notices called Margaret Ellen McGuire the mother and mother-in-law of the McGuire, Churchitt, Wyatte and Bell mourners, and the sister of William, John, Patrick and Thomas Hickey, Mrs. McGreevy, Mrs. Jarvis and Mrs. Rogers.
