William Hickey was born on 24 May 1861 at Walloon, in the Ipswich district of Queensland, the son of John Hickey and Ellen Condon — a parentage this archive carried from the family tree for years and which his birth registration now proves. On 31 August 1887 he married Ellen O'Shea, who had been born at Walloon herself four years after him, and they had seven children. He died at Coominya on 26 September 1947, aged 86, in the same place his wife had died seventeen years before, and was buried beside her at Ipswich General Cemetery under the stone she already had. Their eldest daughter Mary Ellen was added to it three months later.

It identifies him as a son of John Joseph Hickey and Ellen Condon, husband of Ellen Hickey, and father of Mary Ellen, John Joseph, Ida Maud, William Michael, Patrick James, Eileen Dorothy, and Cecilia Ann Hickey; this archive also contains a contradictory relationship that places another Ellen Hickey among his children. None of these family links is established by a found civil or church record.

An Ipswich cemetery transcription for John Thomas Hoare reads "s/- William Hickey & Ellen Shea." This may point toward a William Hickey and an Ellen whose maiden name was Shea, but the transcription is internally inconsistent and does not establish that this was the William in the family tree. His residence and occupation are not known from this archive.
