Rosine Antretter arrived from Rotterdam aboard Schiedam on 17 September 1880, a 19-year-old German farmer, and married George Hoffman in Bayonne thirteen months later. Her death is documented at last. It had been carried here on the family's word alone, unsourced. The New Jersey index of deaths for 1925–29 — a volume arranged by municipality, with a page headed Bayonne — lists Hoffman, Rose in November 1929. She had to be looked for under the name she died with, not the one she was born with.

Life
Rosa Antreter was recorded as Rosine Antretter in the Germans to America index. It says that she arrived at Manhattan on 17 September 1880 aboard the Schiedam from Rotterdam, age 19, born in Germany, with occupation “Farmer.” She was thus a young farm worker travelling alone or independently into the surviving index, not merely an undated immigrant in a later census.
On 4 October 1881, thirteen months after arrival, the New Jersey marriage index records 20-year-old Rosine Antretner marrying 36-year-old Geo. Hoffman at Bayonne. The image is unavailable and no parents are indexed. Her FamilySearch profile gives the birth name Rosine Antretner, birth on 22 March 1862 in Germany with six sources attached, and death on 26 November 1929 in Bayonne. Because those underlying sources were not supplied here, the exact birth and death days remain tree-level claims; the New Jersey death index independently supports Bayonne and November 1929. The dates also conflict slightly: the passenger index gives age 19 and an implied 1861 birth, while 22 March 1862 would make her 18 on arrival. Both are retained.
Her children’s baptismal records preserve the name variants: George’s 1885 entry says “Rose Andredes,” Rosa’s 1887 entry “Rosa Antreter,” and Mary’s 1889 entry “Rose Andretner.” Other tree forms include Rosa Antretta and Rosa Andretner. The variations show how differently clerks heard or wrote the same surname.
The FamilySearch tree names Bernard Antretner and Margareth Pfeiffer as her parents without sources. They are retained only as leads. Rotterdam was a usual departure port for southern German emigrants travelling down the Rhine; that is an inference consistent with the surname’s previously noted Bavarian/Tyrolean character, not proof of a region.
By 1900 Rosa and George lived at 36 West 23rd Street in Bayonne. The census recorded her as “Mar 1862 … Married … 18 … 9 … 9 … Germany … 1880,” meaning nine children born and all nine living. They owned the house with a mortgage. The 1912 Sanborn map, sheet 50 (external address omitted for offline reading) labels West 23rd Street and lot 36 and shows a two-and-a-half-storey wooden dwelling. The New Jersey death index lists “Hoffman | Rose” in Bayonne in November 1929 but does not supply the exact day.

The DATE column is written only when it changes and carries down: Harmer Rowland is 9 Nov. (November 1929) and the six entries beneath him inherit it, until Hancock Kate at 9 Dec. Hoffman Rose therefore falls in November 1929.

- Find a German or New Jersey record naming Bernard Antretner and Margareth Pfeiffer before accepting them as parents.
- Identify her exact German birthplace; Rotterdam and surname character do not prove a region.
- Obtain the unavailable marriage image and underlying sources for the exact birth and death dates.
- [HER PARENTS — AND A CERTIFICATE THAT WOULD NAME THEM] She is Andrew Leahey's 2x-great-grandmother and has no parents recorded, one of the sixteen places his direct line stops. She arrived from Rotterdam on the Schiedam in September 1880, aged nineteen, a German farm worker — so her parents are German and are named on no American record this archive holds. A New Jersey death certificate of November 1929, Bayonne, names the deceased's father and mother, including the mother's maiden name. The state index entry found on 12 August 2026 is enough to order it: name, municipality, month and year. That is the cheapest route into a German family this archive cannot otherwise reach. - Unsourced FamilySearch parents Bernard Antretner and Margareth Pfeiffer are leads only.
- Inference: Rotterdam was usual for southern German emigrants travelling down the Rhine, consistent with the surname’s Bavarian/Tyrolean character, but it proves no region.
- She bore at least nine children between about 1882 and June 1900 — eighteen years of it — and the 1900 census caught the last of them at nought days old.
