Son of “George” and “Rose Andredes,” later the Bayonne household head whose index card names wife “Mary T” and daughter “Catherine.” George went from teenage pressman in his father’s West 23rd Street home to head of a seven-person household on West 30th Street. The family had also lost three-month-old Edward in 1914.

Life
George J. Hoffman was born on 29 June 1885 and baptized on 19 July. The baptism names his father as George and his mother as "Rose Andredes," a church spelling of Rosa Antreter's maiden name. Although the form's heading mentions place of birth, the filled entry does not supply one. The 1900 census says he was born in New Jersey to German-born parents.
In 1900 George was 14 and lived with his parents and siblings at 36 West 23rd Street in Bayonne. The census called him a "Print Pressman" and reported no unemployment during the preceding year.
George later married Mary T. Lynch. Their infant son Edward's 1914 funeral entry names the parents as "George/US | Mary Lynch/US" and gives their address as 10 West 21st Street. Edward was born on 22 September 1914 and was only three months old when the funeral entry was made on 19 December. He was buried in Hudson County Catholic Cemetery, Block C, No. 1061.
By 1920 George headed the household at 132 West 30th Street in Bayonne. The census index lists George and Mary, both 35 and born in New Jersey, with Joseph, 13; Frank, 11; Catherine, 9; George, 6; and James, 3½. The available index card does not preserve George's occupation or property status.
A 1937 Bayonne Times death-notice index lists "Hoffman | George" with wife Mary and her maiden name Lynch, making it a strong match to this man. The index gives neither the notice date nor the death place, and the online state death index has no coverage for 1937. His exact death details therefore still require the original notice or certificate.
How we know this: Baptism, census, funeral, and notice-index evidence documents George from birth through family life, but his death details are incomplete. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

What we still don't know
- His exact birthplace
- His marriage date and place
- His occupation and property status in 1920
- His exact death date and place in or around 1937
- The free online New Jersey death index says its coverage is “1901-1903, 1920-1929, and 1949-2000” and that for 1930–1948 the state “could not locate the death index data,” so it cannot test the 1937 notice. Obtain the original 1937 notice/death certificate and the full 1920 schedule (volume 53, ED 15, sheet 1, line 63) for occupation and property details.
