Daughter of “Timothy” Lynch and “Catherine Griffis,” later the “Mary T” recorded as George J. Hoffman’s wife. Mary was baptized ten days after her 1884 birth and later raised a large family on West 30th Street. The funeral book preserves the family’s loss of infant Edward in 1914, including his exact birth date and cemetery block.

Life

Mary T. Lynch was born on 18 September 1884 and baptized on 28 September. Her baptism names her father as Timothy and her mother as "Catherine Griffis." The sponsors were Joseph Hickey and Cath. Welsh.

Mary married George J. Hoffman, although no marriage record has yet been found. The New Jersey bride index for 1904–1909 lists nine women named Mary Lynch, but none married a George Hoffman. The marriage may have occurred outside those years or outside New Jersey.

The couple's infant son Edward was born on 22 September 1914. His funeral entry, dated 19 December, names "George/US | Mary Lynch/US" as his parents, gives the address 10 West 21st Street, and says he was buried in Hudson County Catholic Cemetery, Block C, No. 1061.

By 1920 Mary lived at 132 West 30th Street in Bayonne. The census index records "Hoffman, Mary T | W | 35 | New Jersey" with her husband and five children: Joseph, Frank, Catherine, George, and James. It preserves no occupation for her.

A 1937 death-notice index for George Hoffman names his wife as Mary Lynch, further connecting the couple. Our family tree reports that Mary died about 1948, but the available online New Jersey death index has no coverage for 1930–1948, and no record in this archive verifies that date. Her exact death and burial details remain unknown.
