Minnie Hoffman

Born November 1882; death not recorded

The eldest daughter in George and Rosa Hoffman’s 1900 Bayonne household: “Minnie … Daughter … Nov 1882 … 17.” The user-tree spouse John Scheren is a lead only; it was not verified. Minnie entered Bayonne’s workforce young: at 17 she was already a roller printer while living in the crowded Hoffman home on West 23rd Street.

Life

Minnie Hoffman was born in New Jersey in November 1882, according to the 1900 census. She was the eldest daughter listed in the home of the German-born George and Rosa Hoffman at 36 West 23rd Street in Bayonne.

At 17, Minnie was already employed as a "Roller Printer." The census reported no unemployment during the previous year and recorded that she could read, write, and speak English. It does not identify the firm for which she worked or the material she printed.

Our family tree names John Scheren as her husband, but no record in this archive confirms that marriage. New Jersey bride indexes contain five other women named Minnie Hoffman who married between 1902 and 1913—to Charles Hann, Adolph Leemann, Sylveste Withers, Norman Heil, and Lewis W. Ulmer—but those index entries provide no parents or residence and cannot be assigned to this Minnie.

No verified record in this archive traces Minnie after 1900. Her marriage, later work and residence, and death remain unknown.

How we know this: The 1900 census gives a solid childhood and employment snapshot, but no later event has been securely identified. [1][2][3]

Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • Her exact birth date and place
  • Whether she married John Scheren or another indexed husband
  • Her later occupation and residences
  • Her death date and burial place
  • The John Scheren marriage lead remains unproved and may have occurred outside New Jersey, under a spelling such as Schering/Scheeren, or belong to a different Minnie. Compare each candidate marriage certificate’s parents and search 1910/1920 census and Bayonne directories.
