Thomas Francis Meaney was born at Hamilton, Bermuda, on 19 November 1849 — the only person in this archive born there, and the fact is confirmed by two censuses as well as his headstone. He was in Jersey City by 1860, aged eleven. He married Catherine about 1869 or 1870 and their children were raised in Bayonne. He died at Bayonne on 23 November 1917, four days after his sixty-eighth birthday, and lies at Holy Name Cemetery in block D, section C, grave 94, with Catherine beside him in the same grave twenty years later.

Fourth Ward of Jersey City, page 144, entered as Thos F Meaney, 11, born Bermuda. The household also holds James Meaney 25 and Mary Meaney 25, both born Ireland, Agness Meaney 1 born New York, and Margaret Meaney 60 born Ireland. James and Mary are far too young to be his parents — they would have been fourteen — so this is not his parents' household, or the ages are badly wrong. Margaret at 60 could be a grandmother and James an uncle or an older brother. Nothing here is attached.

What we still don't know
- His parents. The 1860 census puts him at eleven in a Jersey City Meaney household, but the only adults in it are 25 and 60. He is not attached to any of them. What would settle it: the 1850 or 1855 census, a Bermuda baptism at Hamilton about November 1849, or his 1917 New Jersey death certificate.
- Why Bermuda? Irish families reached Bermuda in the 1840s through the Royal Naval Dockyard and the garrison, and through the convict hulks. A Meaney born at Hamilton in 1849 who is in Jersey City by 1860 suggests a father in one of those, followed by a move on to America. This is context and a search direction, not a claim.
- [CONFLICT] Marriage year 1869 (memorial) against 1870 (1900 census). Both retained.
- [A JERSEY CITY MEANEY CIRCLE IN 1889 — A LEAD, NOT A LINK] The Jersey City News of 21 November 1889 reports a wedding at St. Joseph's where Miss Sadie Meaney was maid of honour and the groom was attended by Dennis Meaney, with “Mr. and Mrs. T. Meaney” and “Mr. and Mrs. M. Meaney” among the guests. The same paper's account of a school entertainment that June names Misses S. Meaney, M. Meaney, Sadie Meaney and Maud Meaney as pupils. None of this is attached to anyone. Mr. and Mrs. T. Meaney is a tempting fit for this man and Catherine Roland, and it is nothing more than a fit: `AGENTS.md` is explicit that surname plus place is not evidence of kinship, and Meaney was not rare in Jersey City. Recorded with the citation so the pages can be re-read by someone who can test them — a marriage record for Sadie or Dennis Meaney would do it.
