Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • Her birth, her origins and her death, none of which is recorded. With a maiden name to search on, her marriage to Thomas Meaney — probably in the 1860s or 1870s — is now findable in a way it was not before.
  • Whether Roland is the spelling. It is one clerk's hand at Bayonne; Rowland, Rolan and the Irish Rowlands are all worth trying.
  • Her children's births would each give her name again and would test the spelling.
  • [HER SURNAME IN THE PARISH REGISTER] Two of her daughters' baptisms enter her as “Cath. Rohling” (1887) and “Cath. Rohlan” (1890) — the clerk's attempts at Roland, and an independent confirmation of the name from a source that is not a headstone or a family notice.
