- LEADING CANDIDATE for his death: Maurice Fitzgerald, farmer, died 10 July 1883 at BALLYLANDERS aged 64, of heart disease, the informant being “Margaret Fitzgerald, wife of deceased, present at death”. Ballylanders is this family's place — his son John's children were born at Cullane, Ballylanders — and the occupation and age both fit. NOT PROVED: an Irish death register never names parents, so nothing in it states the father-son link. A weaker alternative is a Maurice Fitzgerald who died at Kilglass in 1878 aged 68. Two further candidates (1880 aged 68, 1897 aged 84) are unread. Reference: research/findings/88-maurice-fitzgerald-death.md
- If the 1883 Ballylanders death is his, then his wife — John Fitzgerald's mother — was a MARGARET who signed with a cross and was alive in July 1883. She is otherwise unknown to this archive. Caution: John's own wife was also a Margaret (Fraher); they are two different women and must not be merged.
- One rival candidate is now EXCLUDED. The Maurice FitzGerald who died on 9 November 1880 was a WIDOWER and a LABOURER who died in the Mitchelstown workhouse, the informant being “J. Desmond, Chief Resident Officer, Workhouse Mitchelstown” — no family present. Our Maurice is described as a FARMER in the 1870 marriage register. That leaves the 1883 Ballylanders farmer as the clearly strongest candidate, with a weaker Kilglass 1878 alternative and two candidates (1887, 1897) still unread.
