Permits were held up pending an examination of cost estimates as inequities of assessments of industrial properties in Bayonne are said to be mainly responsible for the highest rate in the history of the city. This picture shows a portion of the 66 acres of additional land that the company recently acquired for less than $5000 an acre, which even the company concedes is worth at least five times that amount." "Crews working 24 hours a day will be on the job for at least another six months in repairing the huge catalytic cracking stills that the Tide Water Associated Oil Company says were "burned out" because of the production demands during World War II for high octane gas. The stills in the foreground make the Bayonne refinery the Tide Water's production record breaker and plans now in the making are expected to again place Bayonne in the top spot as a refining center."” Rights: “U.S. and international copyright laws may protect this image. Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

Bayonne and the Industrial Waterfront, 1870–1920

The Bayonne in these family records was a new city built around water, rails and heavy industry. Bayonne Township was formed only in 1861, uniting older settlements on Bergen Neck; it became a city in 1869. The…

What Sponsors and Witnesses Can Tell Us

Catholic registers often preserve the people standing just outside a family photograph. A baptism normally names the child, parents, date and sponsors or godparents; a marriage normally names the couple and wit…

Reading Irish Civil Registration

The year 1864 is the dividing line in this family’s Irish paper trail. Civil registration began in 1845 for non-Catholic and civil marriages, but from 1 January 1864 the law required registration of all births,…

A Stillman in Bayonne’s Oil Works

A Vessel Captain in New York Harbor

What we still don't know

  • The notice calls Gerard Gorman, Thomas Smith and Audrey Blomquist his children, but the surnames do not establish whether each relationship was biological, adoptive, step or married-name usage. Preserve only the stated parent-child relationship.
  • Age 80 on 6 May 1981 implies birth between 7 May 1900 and 6 May 1901; obtain the certificate or SS-5 before assigning an exact birth.
  • [CONFLICT] Spouse readings are Teresa M. Burke (family link), Theresa (Burke) (bio), and TERESA A. (stone). The bio names three children while the linked-child panel contains only Gerard.
  • [CONTEXT ONLY] Restricted Bayonne Library Standard Oil/Tidewater items establish refinery/fire/strike setting, not employment or appearance in an image. Most fire views concern 4 July 1900; item 244’s undated note says “Big strike, Tidewater Oil Co.” and must not be labeled 1915/1916 or Standard Oil.
