What we still don't know
- He was a **labourer**, and his son's marriage register of February 1884 **does not mark him deceased** — where it does mark the bride's father so, in the very next line. That is a small thing carefully recorded by the registrar and it suggests John was alive in 1884. He was dead by 1901, when his widow Bridget Durkan was living in Peter's house.
- His wife is now known: **Bridget Durkan**, born about 1811, who was living as a widow in her son Peter's house at Derrycreeve in 1901 — so John was dead by then.
- Marked deceased on the evidence of chronology alone: his son Peter married in 1884, so John Cooney cannot be living. No birth or death record has been found for him.
