Life

Margaret Leahey is documented in the funeral register as "Margaret | Leahey … 05/20/1914 | 83 W 12th St. … James/US | Barbara Brennan/US … Aged 11m, Born US." That entry establishes her parents, household, age, and date of death. It does not give her exact date of birth or her cause of death.

Her father James died at the same address twelve days later, on 1 June 1914. The cause of death for both Margaret and James is still unknown. Their closeness in time raises an understandable question, but it does not prove an accident, epidemic, or shared illness.

The 1912 Sanborn map, sheet 37 (external address omitted for offline reading) gives the address a physical shape: lot 83 held a yellow building marked "2½" and "D", a small two-and-a-half-storey wooden dwelling. A relative can now picture the kind of house in which Margaret spent her short life, while the map documents the building in 1912 rather than the family's occupancy before 1914.

The exact answer about both deaths survives offline in the New Jersey State Archives series "Death Certificates and Indexes, 1878–1946," alphabetical reel "394 1914: Kin - Lom" (external address omitted for offline reading), which covers Leahey. The state health report's "MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY TABLE FOR HUDSON COUNTY ... BY SANITARY DISTRICTS FOR THE YEAR ENDING OCTOBER 31, 1914" tabulates typhoid, diphtheria, scarlet fever and tuberculosis for Bayonne. That published city-wide table makes the epidemic question researchable, but it names no person and supplies no cause for Margaret or James.

How we know this: The funeral register documents Margaret's parents, address, age, and death date. Her cause of death remains unknown; no cause is inferred from the city-wide health report. [1][2]

Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • Obtain Margaret's full death certificate from New Jersey State Archives reel 394, "1914: Kin - Lom," to learn her cause of death.
  • Obtain James's certificate from the same reel and compare the two; their deaths twelve days apart must remain an open question until both records are read.
  • What was Margaret's exact date of birth and burial location?
