The woman is recorded as Barbara, not Barbera: St. Mary Star of the Sea baptized Barbara Brennan, daughter of Thomas and Catherine Lavelle, in 1886. Our family tree's “Barbera /Brennan/” and 1887–1963 dates are therefore partly wrong. Barbara’s baptism says “June 10 - 1886” and names sponsor “Patrick Powers”. Her marriage index and baby Margaret’s funeral entry then carry the family into a West 12th Street household in 1914: “83 W 12th St.”. Her second husband is now named: William Murphy, whom she married in New Jersey in 1916 — found in the state bride index, which files a remarrying widow under her maiden name.

Life

Barbera Brennan is called Barbara Brennan in the contemporary records. St. Mary Star of the Sea recorded her birth on 10 June 1886 and baptism three days later. The register reads: "Barbara Brennan | June 10 – 1886 | June 13 – 1886 | Thomas | Cath. Lavelle | Patrick Powers." It identifies her parents as Thomas Brennan and Catherine Lavelle and names Patrick Powers as sponsor. The spelling recorded here "Barbera" and birth year 1887 are therefore contradicted by the church record.

The New Jersey marriage index (external address omitted for offline reading) records "BRENNAN BARBARA | LEAHEY JAMES | 24 | 141" in 1904. The index does not give the place or month, and the marriage return has not yet been obtained.

By May 1914, Barbara and James were living at "83 W 12th St." Their daughter Margaret's funeral entry names her parents as "James/US | Barbara Brennan/US" and says she was eleven months old when she died on 20 May 1914. James died twelve days later at age twenty-eight. His funeral entry still gave the same address and described him as married and employed as a train operator.

The 1912 Sanborn map, sheet 37 (external address omitted for offline reading) lets a relative picture their home rather than only read its address. Lot 83 held a yellow building marked "2½" and "D": using the Library of Congress key, a small two-and-a-half-storey wooden dwelling. The map documents the building in 1912; it does not by itself place the family there before their 1914 records.

A volunteer memorial identifies Barbara as Barbara Brennan Leahey Murphy, while the New Jersey death index contains the entry "MURPHY BARBARA" for December 1961. These two items suggest that she later used the surname Murphy, but this archive contains neither a second marriage record nor a death certificate proving that the indexed Barbara Murphy was James Leahey's widow. The reported second marriage, her precise death identity, and her burial therefore remain open questions.

Married William Murphy — her second marriage, and his name at last

Two years a widow with four young children, she married William Murphy. Their daughter Marian followed in 1916 or 1917 and their son William in 1917 or 1918. The index gives file number 25547. She is the only Barbara Brennan in the entire 1915–1919 New Jersey bride index. This is why no Belmar deed under Leahey or Brennan was ever going to find the house — after 1916 she was Barbara Murphy. [10]

  • [THE BELMAR HOUSE — THE SEARCH NAME WAS WRONG] The Monmouth County deed index was to be searched under Brennan, Leahey and Murphy, with the note that the second husband "has never been identified". He has now: William Murphy, married 1916. Search the deeds under William Murphy and Barbara Murphy first. The house was used in summers about 1947–1952, and he was dead by April 1950, so a deed could stand in either name — or pass from his estate to hers.
  • [THE BELMAR HOUSE — AND WHY NO CENSUS WILL EVER SHOW IT] Andrew Leahey recalls that his father, born 1947, stayed with this woman at a house in Belmar in the summers before he started school, so about 1947–1952. The 1950 census falls inside that window and it settles the shape of the thing: on 10 April 1950 she was living at Bayonne, head of her own household in Enumeration District 23-102. So Belmar was a summer house, not her home — and a census records usual residence, which is precisely why searching Belmar for her found nothing. Searched and confirmed empty: the 1950 census of Belmar has no Barbara of her age and no Leahey at all; the 1940 census of Belmar and South Belmar has one Barbara of the right age, Barbara Kraemer, born in New York, who is not her. So the census route is closed by evidence, not by failure, and the answer lies in property records. In order of promise: the Monmouth County Clerk's deed index, searched under Brennan, Leahey and Murphy — and note the deed may be in the name of her second husband, who has still not been identified; her 1961 death record or obituary; and Belmar's municipal tax rolls for the late 1940s.
  • Obtain the 1904 marriage return (ledger 24, page 141) for residences and parents; identify and document the reported second husband Murphy; obtain Barbara Murphy’s 1961 death certificate or obituary before accepting the state-index row as hers.
  • Identify the Catherine/Cath. Lavelle named in the Brennan baptismal material: the existing 1894 Catherine profile cannot be this person’s mother and was detached pending resolution of the date or identity conflation.
  • [RESOLVED ENOUGH TO ACT ON — JAMES FRANCIS LEAHEY IS HERE NOW] Find a Grave listed a son James Francis Leahey, 1911–1983, whom this archive did not hold. Searching Holy Cross by cemetery rather than by name settled it: he is buried in her own grave, Blk-64 Sec-A Gr-718 — she in 1A, John Joseph in 2A, James in 2B. He has been added, flagged compiled. The William Leahey this archive already held has not been touched: he came from the family tree with no sources, no William Leahey is buried at Holy Cross, and he and James may well be one man under two given names. That is recorded on both pages and left for a census to settle.
