James Francis Leahey
This entry is about James Francis Leahey (14 May 1911 – 16 April 1983). For other family members with the same first and family name, see James D. Leahey (29 January 1940 – 18 September 2007), James D. Leahey (about 1886 – 1 June 1914), James J. Leahey (27 February 1864 – 10 April 1947).
14 May 1911 – 16 April 1983
James Francis Leahey was born at Bayonne on 14 May 1911, the fourth child of James D. Leahey and Barbara Brennan, and was three when his father died. He died on 16 April 1983, aged 71. He is buried in his mother's own grave at Holy Cross — Blk-64 Sec-A Gr-718, she in 1A, his brother John Joseph in 2A and James in 2B. That shared grave is why he is here: this archive did not hold him at all until 11 August 2026, and a cemetery plot shared with a mother and a brother is a good deal more than a name on a list.

Timeline
Born at Bayonne
[COMPILED] The date comes from his Find a Grave memorial, not from a birth record. [1]
Proved by a record
Buried in his mother's grave at Holy Cross
Barbara lies in 1A of the same grave and his brother John Joseph in 2A. Three of one family in one grave. [2]

[NEGATIVE, CONTROLLED] New Jersey has no death record for him in 1983
Find a Grave gives his death as 16 April 1983. The New Jersey death index for 1983 does not contain him. The whole alphabetical run was read on the page image and is unbroken — LEAF, then two Leaheys (George E. on 04/22/83 and Mary on 10/20/83), then seven Leahys, then LEALE. Neither James Leahy on the page fits: 02/09/83 and 10/09/83. Leahy and Lahey were searched too. The control is the page itself — his brother George is on it, correctly, six lines above where James would fall. So either he died outside New Jersey and was brought home to the family grave, or the memorial's date is wrong. The two brothers' dates are six days apart, which is either a striking coincidence or a sign that one memorial borrowed from the other. This is not resolved, and his page keeps the compiled date with this negative beside it. [3]

What we still don't know
- [HIS DEATH IS NOT IN NEW JERSEY] Searched and controlled on 11 August 2026: the 1983 state death index holds his brother George but not him, under Leahey, Leahy or Lahey. Look outside New Jersey — a man buried at Holy Cross need not have died in the state. The Social Security Death Index is the obvious next place, and it is free.
- [COMPILED, NOT PROVED] Everything on this page comes from Find a Grave — the dates, the parents and the plot. No birth, marriage or death record has been fetched for him. The corroboration that makes him worth adding is structural rather than documentary: he sits in the birth order his mother's family left empty (1905, 1907, 1909, 1911, 1913) and he is buried in her grave. A New Jersey death record for 16 April 1983 would settle it properly.
- [HE MAY BE THE 'WILLIAM LEAHEY' THIS ARCHIVE ALREADY HELD] See that page. A William Leahey, son of the same parents, has been carried here from the family tree with no sources at all, and no William Leahey is buried at Holy Cross. The two may be one man under the wrong given name. Neither record has been merged or deleted.
