Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • [CORRECTED — HE IS HER SON, NOT A SON-IN-LAW] Earlier on 10 August 2026 this archive removed his parent link on the reasoning that he had married into the Leahey family and had been mistaken for a son in a death notice. That was wrong, and the 1950 census says so plainly: he is in Barbara Murphy's household at Bayonne, entered as Son, aged 32. The reasoning failed because it assumed only one marriage. Barbara was widowed in 1914 and married again; William, born about 1918, is a child of that second marriage and a half-brother to the Leahey children. His father was a Murphy and is still unidentified — which is why his surname differs from his half-siblings' and why he looked like an in-law.
  • [PRIVACY FLAG CORRECTED] This person was marked as possibly living, which suppressed everything about them. Nothing in their record refers to any year after 1887, so they cannot be alive: even somebody born in that year would be over a hundred and ten now. The flag was a default that had never been revisited, and it was hiding a nineteenth-century person as though they were a contemporary.
  • [COMPILED — A SECOND SET OF DATES] Find a Grave's memorial for their mother gives William Henry Murphy, 1917–1997, where this archive carries a birth year inferred from an age in the 1950 census. The two differ by about a year. Both are kept; neither has been preferred, because a compiled memorial and a census age are each capable of being the wrong one.
