Person in this family

Jane Stilwell

Born about 1836; death not recorded

Jane E. Stilwell, a daughter of Henry Stilwell and Cornelia Brokaw, married twice. The 1860 census of Franklin Township has her as Jane Vroom, 24, in the household of Peter Vroom — with her widowed mother and her small brother Simon living with them. By the New Jersey state census of 1885 she is Jane E. Liddell of Perth Amboy, married to George Liddell, so Peter Vroom had died and she had married again. She and George had two daughters, Mary and Susan, and when her brother William died in 1878 they took in and adopted his five-year-old son George. Her mother lived in her house in 1885 and 1895.

Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • [CONFIRMED FROM A RECORD] The 1885 New Jersey state census has her as Jane E Liddell at Perth Amboy Ward 1 with George Liddell and George S Liddell — and with Cornelia Stillwell, over 60, in the same house. Her second marriage, her nephew's adoption and her mother's living arrangements were all a volunteer's account until this sheet was read.
  • [A CORRECTION MADE THE SAME DAY] A note here briefly said the 1895 census marked her Foreign, which would have been impossible for a New Jersey-born Stilwell daughter. That came from a search-results list, not from the record. The record itself gives her as Native and her husband as Foreign, which is exactly what one would expect. Read the record, not the result row.
  • [TWO HUSBANDS] The 1860 census makes her a Vroom; the 1885 and 1895 state censuses make her a Liddell. Neither marriage has been found, and Peter Vroom's death — some time between 1860 and 1885 — is the event that separates them.
  • Whether this child existed. The 1850 census names only four children at home and this one is not among them, so the year given here may be badly wrong, or the child may belong to a different family.
  • The 1860 and 1870 censuses for the household, which would confirm or remove several of these siblings at once.
  • [CHECKABLE, AND NOT YET CHECKED] The memorial biography names specific censuses for this person in specific towns. Each one is an ordinary indexed record and can be confirmed in a single search — the attempt was cut short on 9 August 2026 when the FamilySearch session expired. Until then everything here from that biography stands as uncertain.
