Person in this family

Peter Vroom

about 1822 – between 1860 and 1885

Peter Vroom was born in New Jersey about 1822 and was 38 in the 1860 census of Franklin Township, Somerset County, heading a household that contained Jane Vroom, 24 — Jane Stilwell — together with her widowed mother Cornelia and her nine-year-old brother Simon. He was Jane's first husband, and he died before 1885, by which time she had married George Liddell of Perth Amboy. Vroom is one of the old Dutch names of Somerset County, like Brokaw, Stryker and Polhemus, and he belongs to the same world as the rest of this line. He is not a blood ancestor of anyone in this archive — he married into the family.

What we still don't know

  • [THE VROOM CONNECTION IS OLDER THAN THIS MARRIAGE] This archive looked at the Vroom name once before and concluded there was nothing in it. There is. Quite apart from Peter Vroom marrying Jane Stilwell in the 1850s, Caleb Brokaw — Jane's great-grandfather — served in the Revolution as a private in Captain Peter Dumont Vroom's Company, Second Regiment of the Somerset County Militia. So a Brokaw stood in a Vroom's company in the 1770s and a Vroom married a Brokaw's great-granddaughter eighty years later, in the same county. That is not kinship and it is not coincidence either: it is what a closed Dutch community in Somerset County looks like over three generations.
  • His marriage to Jane Stilwell, before 1860, and his death, before 1885. Neither has been found.
  • His parents. Vroom is a substantial old New Jersey Dutch family — Peter Dumont Vroom was Governor of New Jersey in the 1830s and was living in Jersey City by 1860 — and it would be easy to assume a connection to that branch from the surname and the county alone. Nothing here supports one. He is a Somerset County Vroom of the right stock and that is all that can be said.
  • Whether he and Jane had children. None appears with them in 1860.
