August William Mayer was born at Queens on 1 February 1907, the eldest son of Michael Stillwell Mayer and Mary Magdalena Emerich. He served in the United States Army in the Second World War as a Technician Fifth Grade. He married Florence Rose Seelig, daughter of Louis Seelig and Sarah Moore, at Brooklyn on 17 July 1933 — not, as this archive believed until August 2026, Florence Selig the daughter of Samuel Selig and Gussie Nathanson — and the censuses of 1940 and 1950 find them with their daughters Joan and Ruth, first in Queens and then at Hempstead in Nassau County. He died on 3 March 1973, aged 66, and is buried under a government headstone at Long Island National Cemetery.

- [RESOLVED, AND IT CHANGED THE LINE] His marriage is now sourced: **Brooklyn, 17 July 1933**, to **Florence Seelig, 24, daughter of Louis and Sarah Moore**. The Florence this archive had given him — Samuel Selig's daughter, born 1908 — is a different woman. See finding 117.
- His unit and his service dates. The headstone gives the rank and the war but not the regiment; a National Archives service file would.
- He is also recorded with a second wife, Marie F. Mark. Neither the order of the marriages nor what ended the first is documented.
- [CONFLICT — LIKELY MIS-ASSEMBLED] This archive records **August William Mayer (b. 1 February 1907)** as the father of **Alice (b. about 1923)** and **William Francis (b. 14 October 1925)** by **Marie F. Mark (b. 1890)**. The arithmetic does not work comfortably: August would have been **sixteen** and **eighteen**, and Marie was **seventeen years older than him**. His documented marriage is to Florence Selig, by whom Joan (1934) and Ruth (1936) fit his age exactly. The likeliest readings are that Marie was a later wife and Alice and William were her children by an earlier marriage — that is, his stepchildren — or that these two belong to a different Mayer altogether. **No relationship has been deleted**, because nothing yet disproves any of them; but none of the four pages now states the parentage as fact. A New York marriage record for August and Marie, or birth certificates for Alice and William naming their father, would settle it.
- Alice Mayer (1923) and William Francis Mayer (1925) are recorded as his children by Marie F. Mark, but he was born in 1907 and would have been sixteen and eighteen. They are more likely his siblings or another August's children. Left as recorded, flagged, and not used.
