Mark (b. 1890). The arithmetic does not work comfortably: August would have been sixteen and eighteen, and Marie was seventeen years older than him. His documented marriage is to Florence Selig, by whom Joan (1934) and Ruth (1936) fit his age exactly. The likeliest readings are that Marie was a later wife and Alice and William were her children by an earlier marriage — that is, his stepchildren — or that these two belong to a different Mayer altogether. No relationship has been deleted, because nothing yet disproves any of them; but none of the four pages now states the parentage as fact. A New York marriage record for August and Marie, or birth certificates for Alice and William naming their father, would settle it.
