Person in this family

Michael Stillwell Mayer

This entry is about Michael Stillwell Mayer (Born 25 October 1885; death not recorded). For other family members with the same first and family name, see Michael Mayer (17 April 1855 – 30 July 1902), Michael Melvin Mayer (27 November 1904 – November 1971).

Born 25 October 1885; death not recorded

Michael Stillwell Mayer was born about 1885, the son of Michael Mayer and Leah Adelaine Stillwell. On 22 February 1903 he married Mary Magdalena Emerich at Brooklyn. He was seventeen and she was eighteen — he was not yet of age, and the marriage record names both sets of parents, which is how his wife's descent from Conrad Emrich and Magdalena Schoendorf is proved rather than assumed. He married again on 14 December 1914, at Manhattan, to Cora B. Brosnihan. Three sons are recorded by the first marriage. The second of them, Herman Vincent, died at seven months old in July 1909. The 1915 state census finds him at house 239 in Manhattan with Cora and both surviving sons, Michael Melvin, ten, and August William, nine.

Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • His draft card exists but **FamilySearch holds no image of it**, so the address it carries — which would place him in Manhattan to the street in 1917 or 1918 — cannot be read. See finding 120.
  • [PRIVACY FLAG CORRECTED] This person was marked as possibly living, which suppressed everything about them. Nothing in their record refers to any year after 1909, so they cannot be alive: even somebody born in that year would be over a hundred and ten now. The flag was a default that had never been revisited, and it was hiding a nineteenth-century person as though they were a contemporary.
  • [RESOLVED — ORDER] The two marriages are now dated: Mary Magdalena Emerich on 22 February 1903, and Cora B. Brosnihan on 14 December 1914. What ended the first is still unrecorded, but Mary must have died or the marriage ended before December 1914.
  • [NEGATIVE CONTROLLED] **His death is still unknown.** The Social Security index holds a Michael Mayer born 1885 who died in Ulster County, New York, in October 1973 — but that record gives **24 November 1885** against the **25 October 1885** on his own birth certificate. A month apart is not a rounding error, and Ulster County is far from the Queens and Nassau ground this family kept to. Rejected and logged in the rolodex.
  • [CONTROLLED NEGATIVE] **No New York city-directory entry exists for him.** A search of FamilySearch's city and business directories for a Michael Mayer resident in New York between 1910 and 1922 returns **nothing at all**. That closes the fourth route to the Manhattan street address behind house number 239 — after the 1915 census image (Ancestry only), his own draft card (index with no image), and the 1905 state census (he is not in it; the Manhattan Michael Mayer it returns was born 1862). See finding 120.
