Person in this family

Florence Rose Seelig

15 April 1909 – 29 August 1997

Florence Rose Seelig was born at Manhattan on 15 April 1909, the daughter of Louis Seelig and Sarah Moore, and grew up in Brooklyn. On 17 July 1933, at Brooklyn, she married August William Mayer. The 1940 census finds them in Queens with their daughters Joan and Ruth. She is the mother of Ruth Mayer, and so the great-grandmother of Gina Cacace — a direct line. She outlived August by twenty-four years, moved to Florida, worked as a bookkeeper, and died at Ocala on 29 August 1997, aged 88. She was identified only in August 2026; until then this archive had the wrong woman in her place, and — the detail that confirms it — the Ocala death that woman was given belonged to her. See finding 117.

Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • Her burial. The obituary gives the death and the newspaper but no cemetery, and no memorial has been found.
  • Whether she and August had children after 1940.
  • When she left New York for Florida, and why. She was in Queens in 1940 and 1950 and died at Ocala in 1997, with nothing in between.
