Person in this family

Maureen Ann Fitzgerald

13 October 1950 – 25 May 2005

Maureen Ann Fitzgerald, the site owner's mother's sister, married Frank Santangelo. Santangelo therefore belongs with the Fitzgerald side, not the Cacace side. She is buried in her grandfather Andrew Joseph Farley's grave at Holy Cross, North Arlington, at her own request — the family's answer to this archive's long-open question of who shares that plot.

Proved by a record

Maureen Ann Fitzgerald lived from 13 October 1950 to 25 May 2005 — both dates now confirmed by the New Jersey state death index — married Frank Santangelo, and is buried in her grandfather Andrew Joseph Farley's grave at Holy Cross, at her own request.

Life

Our family tree identifies Maureen Ann Fitzgerald, also entered as Maureen Fitzgerald, as a daughter of John Joseph Fitzgerald and Margaret Mary Farley. It gives her dates as 13 October 1950 to 25 May 2005 and names Frank Santangelo as her husband.

Both dates are now documented. The New Jersey state death index carries her as Santangelo, Maureen A, born 13 October 1950, died 25 May 2005, state file 20050028812 — with a second row for the same death under file 2005K028812. Until 21 August 2026 both dates rested on the family's word alone.

She was filed under her married name, which is why she was never found. Every earlier search ran under Fitzgerald. This is the same trap that hid Barbara Brennan's second marriage from this archive for months: an index files a married woman under the name she died with, not the one she was born with.

Her marriage itself is still undocumented. It is not in the New York City marriage licence index, which reaches to 1995 — a controlled search against eleven Frank Santangelo grooms, none of them hers. The Fitzgeralds were a Bayonne and Jersey City family, so the marriage is almost certainly a New Jersey one.

She is buried with her grandfather. The family states that Maureen asked to be interred in Andrew Joseph Farley's grave at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington — Block 50, Section D, Tier G, Grave 10 — where Andrew lies in position 1B and his wife Mary Cooney in 1A. Andrew died in September 1969, when Maureen was eighteen. Her choice is what answered this archive's long-standing question about who shares that plot, a question that had been worked at from cemetery indexes and memorial listings for months and was closed in the end by the family saying so.

She died six days before her mother. Margaret Mary Farley's death on 31 May 2005 is carried in the New Jersey death index; Maureen's on 25 May is family-supplied. The archive records the proximity and does not explain it.

How we know this: Maureen's birth and death dates are confirmed by the New Jersey state death index, file 20050028812. Her marriage remains family-supplied. Her burial with Andrew Joseph Farley and Mary Cooney is family-supplied, stated 20 August 2026, and awaits confirmation from the Holy Cross interment card. [1][2][3]

Buried with her grandfather at Holy Cross, by her own wish

She asked to be interred in Andrew Joseph Farley's grave — Block 50, Section D, Tier G, Grave 10 — rather than elsewhere. Andrew died in September 1969, when she was eighteen. [FAMILY-SUPPLIED] Stated by the site owner, 20 August 2026. Not yet confirmed against the cemetery interment card.

Died six days before her mother

Maureen died on 25 May 2005 and her mother, Margaret Mary Farley, died on 31 May 2005 — six days apart. Margaret's date is supported by the New Jersey death index row “MARGARET,FITZGERALD,MARY,20050035314,5/31/2005,2/13/1920”; Maureen's is family-supplied. The proximity is recorded, not explained.

Died — confirmed by the New Jersey state death index

Both her dates are now documented, and she was filed under her married name. The state index carries Santangelo, Maureen A, born 13 October 1950, died 25 May 2005, state file 20050028812 — with a second row for the same death under file 2005K028812, both retained. Every earlier search ran under Fitzgerald and found nothing, which is the same trap that hid Barbara Brennan's second marriage for months: an index files a married woman under the name she died with. Her mother, Margaret Mary Farley, is in the same index six days later. Finding 153. [3]

[COMPILED] SANTANGELO is on the FITZGERALD side, not the Cacace side. Frank Santangelo married Maureen Ann Fitzgerald, the site owner's mother's sister. | SPATARELLA is on the Cacace side, correctly: Angelina Spatarella married Frederick Cacace

Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • Her marriage record — not in the New York City licence index; the New Jersey marriage index is the place to look next
  • Her place of death, and the certificate itself: New Jersey state file 20050028812 would give cause of death, residence and informant
  • The Holy Cross interment card for Block 50, Section D, Tier G, Grave 10 — it would confirm her interment, confirm Mary Cooney in 1A, and state how many spaces the grave holds and how many remain.
  • [ANSWERED, 21 August 2026] Her birth and death are no longer family-supplied. The New Jersey death index confirms 13 October 1950 and 25 May 2005 and gives state file 20050028812, which the New Jersey State Archives needs to pull the certificate. She is indexed under Santangelo, not Fitzgerald. Finding 153.
  • [NEGATIVE, CONTROLLED, AND IT POINTS SOMEWHERE] Her marriage is not in the New York City marriage licence index, which reaches to 1995. Control: 11 Frank Santangelo grooms are returned, none of them ours. The Fitzgeralds are Bayonne and Jersey City, so this is a New Jersey marriage — and `tools/njvitals.py` is the tool that would reach it. Finding 152.
  • Obtain the Holy Cross interment card for Block 50, Section D, Tier G, Grave 10 — it should confirm Maureen's interment, confirm Mary Cooney at 1A, and state how many spaces the grave holds.
