Named as already dead in his father's death notice
This is the break in the thread that has been blocking him. `RESUME_HERE` had it as: “No death date is known and that is the entire blocker — 'Howard Jones' is unsearchable without one.” His death was known only from family testimony, with no record behind it. His father's notice, printed in the Record-Pilot on 18 January 1996, calls him “the late Howard G. Jr.”. That does not give a date, but it does two things nothing else had: it documents the death rather than resting on testimony, and it bounds it — before 5 January 1996, when he would have been about 61. A bounded search is a searchable one. The Social Security Death Index can now be worked backwards from 1996, and the All Saints churchyard at Great Neck is worth asking about directly. [2]

Grandfather of 21. Reposed at the Whiting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Service at All Saints Episcopal Church, Great Neck. Interment Churchyard. Contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church.

The best untried source is the Social Security Death Index, which gave his father's death — January 1996 at Sea Cliff, Nassau County — to the month. It sits behind a FamilySearch login that was not available when this was searched. A death date or place from the family would make him findable in minutes; without one, "Howard Jones" is close to unsearchable.

Every one of those returned zero. This family is simply not on Find a Grave. Web search: no obituary for a Howard Graham Jones of Great Neck, Sea Cliff or Nassau County. The archive itself: not one burial is recorded anywhere on the Jones side — not his father, his mother Helen Brown, his grandparents, his wife, his sister Janet or his brother George. The only grave on this whole branch belongs to August Mayer, his wife's father, at Long Island National Cemetery. There is no known family plot to look in. The blocker is that no death year is known. "Howard Jones" is one of the commonest names in America and without a year neither the Social Security Death Index nor an obituary index can be narrowed. A year, or the county he died in, would very likely settle this in one search.
