Howard Graham Jones was born in New York on 18 April 1904. By 1935 he had settled at Great Neck on the north shore of Long Island, and he was still there in 1940 and 1950 — the 1940 census puts the household inside Great Neck Village, in the district bounded by Middle Neck Road and Beach Road and taking in the Great Neck Preparatory School. He married Helen Brown and they had three children. His 1942 draft card puts the family at 15 Willow Lane, Great Neck, with a telephone, and names Mrs. Helen B. Jones at the same address as the person who would always know where he was; he was then working for William Barrow Jr. of 25 Middle Neck Road, at premises on Plandome Road in Manhasset. He died on 5 January 1996 at Sea Cliff, a few miles further along the same shore, aged ninety-one. He had no sources at all in this archive until today; the Social Security index confirms to the day a birth date that had been carried only as family compilation. His death notice, found 12 August 2026, adds what no index could: he was buried in the churchyard of All Saints Episcopal Church at Great Neck, the village he had lived in since the 1930s; he had married again, to a Mary B., after Helen died; he was stepfather to six daughters and grandfather of twenty-one — and his son Howard G. Jr. had died before he did.

This page carries New York City. His own draft card, in his own hand, gives the town as Paris and the state as New York — and there is a real town of Paris in Oneida County, upstate. Both readings are kept. A man registering for the draft is stating his own birthplace, which is strong; but Paris invites a second thought, since the form's two boxes are 'Town or county' and 'State or country' and a birth at Paris in France would be written the same way but for the state. His parents Howard Graham Jones and Anna Bateman are unsourced, so nothing else here settles where the family was in 1904. [5]

The household also held Anne Bart, aged 21, whose relationship the index does not give. The residence column records the family in the same place in 1935.

A young woman of twenty-one, Anne Bart, was also in the household — a servant or boarder; the census does not say which and no relationship is claimed here.

He reposed at the Whiting Funeral Home, Glen Head. This is the first burial place recorded for anyone on this branch, and the churchyard is small — an interment record there would very likely hold Helen, and possibly Howard Jr. [4]

What we still don't know

  • His parents. This archive names them as Howard Graham Jones and Anna Bateman on family testimony; no record found today names either, and both remain unsourced.
  • His burial. Neither the Social Security index nor the censuses give it, and no Find a Grave memorial has been matched.
  • [HE MARRIED AGAIN — “MARY B.” IS NOT IN THIS ARCHIVE] The notice calls him “Husband of Mary B. and the late Helen B.”, so Helen predeceased him and he remarried. No person has been created for her: an initial is not a surname, and she may well be living. She brought six daughters, whom the notice calls his stepdaughters, and the twenty-one grandchildren are presumably counted across both families.
  • [HELEN DIED BEFORE 5 JANUARY 1996] The archive holds no death for her at all. “the late Helen B.” fixes an upper bound and nothing more.
  • [PARIS, NEW YORK — WORTH ONE CHECK] If he was born in the town of Paris, Oneida County, that is a specific and searchable place: New York State birth records for 1904 outside New York City sit with the State Department of Health and the town clerk, and the 1905 New York state census would show the family there. It would be the first fixed point on the Jones line before Great Neck and might finally give his parents a place. If instead it is Paris in France, the birthplace on this card and the 'New York City' on his page are both wrong.
