Gabrielle Mueller: a Toms River resident's unsolved killing (2001)

Unsolved in the prosecutor's 2016 appeal · Later official status unverified

Gabrielle Mueller, a Toms River mother of two, was found murdered near Lakewood Industrial Park in April 2001. A later prosecutor appeal sought information about her death.

Three days in April

Mueller was last seen alive on the evening of Sunday, April 1, 2001. Her disappearance was reported to Toms River police the following morning. On April 3, investigators found her body in a wooded area off Salem Street near the Lakewood Industrial Park. The medical finding reported by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office was death by strangulation, classified as homicide. Her blue Toyota Corolla, also missing, was found elsewhere in Lakewood on April 4. These dates come from ABC7's account of the prosecutor's 2016 appeal.

Toms River was her home community; Lakewood was the recovery municipality. The public accounts reviewed here do not establish where she was attacked, where she intended to go, or how her car came to be where it was found. Neither a home address nor a precise recovery spot belongs on an exploration map.

What investigators said later

On the fifteenth anniversary, the prosecutor's office said it had developed no significant clues identifying the person or people responsible and asked the public for information. Patch published the office's appeal on April 22, 2016. That is a dated statement of the investigation, not proof that the office issued the same assessment in 2026. This research pass did not locate a later official resolution or case-specific update.

Nothing in the sources checked establishes a connection between Mueller's killing and the 1974 Suzanne Garden and Cynthia Leslie cases or Todd Sonnenfeld's death. They are grouped here only by local geography and the public record of unresolved questions.

Records still worth finding

A contemporary 2001 account, the original missing-person bulletin, and a later official case update could clarify her last confirmed movements, the car's documented recovery area and the investigation's present status. The anniversary coverage does not supply those records. No person should be named as a suspect on the basis of online speculation.

Sources and research limits

  1. ABC7 Eyewitness News, April 23, 2016 — reports the April 1–4 sequence, age, Toms River residence, Lakewood discovery, cause of death and prosecutor's anniversary appeal.
  2. Patricia A. Miller, Patch, April 22, 2016 — quotes the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office on the unresolved investigation. Its sentence about the discovery morning conflicts with the April 3 date reported by ABC7; the dates above follow ABC7's explicit sequence.

Both reports cover the same prosecutor appeal, so they are not independent case-file confirmations. No autopsy, original police file or later official case statement was inspected. Research checked October 3, 2026.
