Todd Sonnenfeld’s disappearance and Berkeley recovery (1990)

From Route 37 toward Beachwood

Sonnenfeld was at Spirits Sports Bar on Route 37 on June 1, 1990. Patch's 2018 account of contemporary reporting and the prosecutor's appeal says he left shortly after midnight, on June 2, after giving a friend his keys and wallet. He reportedly planned to walk to his family's home on Birch Street in Beachwood, but never arrived. Another 2018 account gives June 1 as the last-seen date, so the night of June 1–2 is the clearest way to state the sequence. The reported destination is a street, not a verified path or a reason to mark a private home.

On January 28, 1991, a resident walking dogs found his skeletal remains near the power-line corridor off Dover Road/Route 530 in Berkeley Township. Patch reports that investigators considered this area out of the way for the anticipated walk, but could not rule out that he went there himself. Its location cannot be treated as his walking route or the place where he died.

Jennifer Peacock’s 2018 report compared the discovery with an earlier missing-person description. A February 1991 newspaper account described a Daytona Speedway T-shirt matching the outfit listed on Sonnenfeld’s poster. That comparison does not replace an examined formal identification record.

The dated appeal

Ocean County investigators were treating the death as a homicide when they renewed their appeal in August 2018. The public account does not disclose a cause of death or establish what happened between the bar and the recovery. That appeal is the latest substantive official position located for this entry; no later case-specific resolution was found in this research pass.
