A Beachwood man disappeared after leaving a Toms River bar; remains recovered months later shifted the search toward homicide.
From a missing-person poster to a recovery
Todd Sonnenfeld was last seen leaving Spirits Sports Bar on Route 37 on June 1, 1990. A man walking his dog near Berkeley power lines found skeletal remains the following January.
Jennifer Peacock’s 2018 report compared the discovery with an earlier missing-person description. A February 1991 newspaper account described clothing that included a Daytona Speedway T-shirt, matching the outfit listed on Sonnenfeld’s poster. The detail connects the missing-person search with the later recovery, but the reporting does not describe the formal identification procedure.
The dated appeal
Ocean County investigators were still treating the death as a homicide when they renewed their appeal in August 2018. That appeal is the latest substantive source located for this entry; it should not be mistaken for a newly issued announcement. The public account leaves the events after the bar, the cause of death, and a suspect unresolved.
