Julia Veronica Leahey

1 September 1914 – 10 January 1965

Julia Veronica Leahey was born at Manhattan on 1 September 1914 and died at Bayonne on 10 January 1965, aged fifty. She married George Edward Leahey in 1933. This archive knew her only as “Vera” — the form the family death notices printed — and carried her with no dates and no sources, suppressed as possibly living. The cemetery gave her her full name: Vera is the short form of Veronica. Her first child died in October 1933, the year she married; her daughter Barbara was born in 1935.

Her death confirmed by the state index

The New Jersey death index for January 1965 carries Leahey, Julia V, certificate 02561 — confirming both the date and, in the middle initial, the Veronica that the family only ever wrote as Vera. The index gives no maiden name, so hers is still unknown. [3]

Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • [HER MAIDEN NAME IS STILL UNKNOWN] The memorial names her Julia Veronica Leahey, her married name. Nothing here gives the name she was born with, and without it her Manhattan birth of 1 September 1914 cannot be looked up. Their 1933 marriage return would name her father and mother; New York City birth certificates to 1909 are free online but 1914 is past that wall.
  • [WHY SHE IS NO LONGER SUPPRESSED] She was carried as possibly living, with name and relations only, because no death was documented. A death of 10 January 1965 is now recorded. It is [COMPILED] from Find a Grave rather than from a certificate.
