John told the coroner he found Katie dead in the morning but could not explain her injuries, although they had slept in the same room. He said he had received a $24 pension on Tuesday and used it for groceries, clothing, and two quarts of whiskey. According to his account, they drank one quart before bed and he finished the second before notifying the coroner. Officials held him pending the coroner’s jury decision.
