Why a few busy bees did not settle the pollination question

Research on cranberry, blueberry and other crops showed why the scale of a survey changes its answer.

A small group did much of the work

Rutgers reported that a 2015 study found pollination of New Jersey watermelon, cranberry and blueberry crops dominated by relatively few effective wild-bee species. Nearly one hundred native species had been observed visiting these crops regionally. The contrast raised a practical question: if a small group supplied much of the service, how many other species mattered to farms? Rutgers agricultural research account (2016).

Across farms and years, the answer expanded

A 2018 Rutgers-led study followed pollination on forty-eight New Jersey and Pennsylvania farms over several years. Researchers collected and identified more than one hundred wild-bee species. Fifty-five were needed for pollination at one or more farms in one or more years. Species that seemed less consequential at one location could matter elsewhere or at another time. Two findings at different scales

The results are compatible: dominance within a particular crop setting does not establish that the same few species can serve an entire agricultural landscape through time. For the region’s berry-growing history, the studies reveal work performed by a changing community of wild insects alongside managed honey bees. Sources and research limits

Underlying species-level data were not reanalyzed. The later study spans two states; it is not represented as an exclusively Pine Barrens survey.
