Unidentified animals
The black cat that divided a Vineland neighborhood
Reported sightings · Identification unconfirmed
Photographs and repeated sightings prompted a wildlife investigation, but the animal’s identity remained disputed.
A photograph and competing explanations
In spring 2007, Vineland residents reported a large, black, long-tailed cat. Zoe Paraskevas photographed it in a field after an earlier March sighting. An animal-control officer interpreted the pictures as a large domestic cat; Paraskevas disagreed. Police considered the distant photographs inconclusive. Sam Wood, The Philadelphia Inquirer (May 2, 2007).
The search for evidence
A state conservation officer searched for tracks and droppings on Saturday and returned Sunday without finding supporting evidence. After television coverage, police received more than thirty calls reporting sightings during the preceding month. The article recorded disagreement between witnesses and officials, rather than a confirmed panther identification. Sam Wood, The Philadelphia Inquirer (May 2, 2007).
