A donated library building grew from earlier lending arrangements and eventually needed a second home for its youngest readers.
A library before the building
The library’s institutional history traces lending to 1867, including books kept by a schoolmaster and later by the women’s club. Mary Irick Drexel’s 1923 gift provided a permanent memorial to her mother, Sally Stretch Keen. At dedication, the collection numbered 504 books and one librarian staffed six weekly hours.
Children changed its geography
Before the school acquired its own library in 1964, pupils walked over each week. In 1976, crowded shelves prompted a separate children’s collection in the former firehouse next door. The Friends of the Library raised money and supported that expansion. Library history.
Why the downspout says 1922
The library explains the apparent date discrepancy: design in 1921, exterior construction in 1922, interior completion and dedication in 1923. January 2023 anniversary notes.
