Unidentified woman killed near Atsion (1892)

Discovery

A Hammonton report dated October 27 located the body just inside Atlantic County, beyond the rise separating it from Camden County. The woman lay on the road from the Atsion bogs to Hammonton and had apparently been dead for hours. Cuts to her throat and neck included a deep wound believed to have caused death; the reporter attributed the injuries to a narrow stabbing weapon.

She was estimated at about 35 years old, slender, and 4 feet 10 inches tall. She had been seen in Hammonton on Monday buying knives and forks, which were beside her body. Torn clothing led officials to suspect sexual assault. Authorities thought she may have belonged to a group of Italian berry pickers recently arrived from Philadelphia, but the clipping reports no identification or arrest.
