Southern pine beetle: the outbreak and the forest left behind

A 2010 survey mapped extensive beetle damage. Later research asked what survived and how suppression treatments changed the recovering forest.
An outbreak measured from air and ground
New Jersey’s May 2011 announcement put the area affected in 2010 at an estimated 14,100 acres. Foresters combined traps, ground observations and aerial surveys. The release linked the outbreak’s expansion to hot, dry conditions that stressed trees. Its acreage describes affected forest, not a count showing every tree within those boundaries had died. A federal forest-resource report adds a historical correction: an outbreak occurred in New Jersey in 1939, followed by a long gap before detection in 2001. Thus the state release’s description of 2001 as the first detection should not become a claim that this was the beetle’s first-ever appearance in New Jersey. New Jersey’s Forest Resources, 2010.
Suppression also changed the survivors
A 2020 study compared infested Pinelands stands and suppression treatments. In the studied infested areas, pine basal area fell by 94 percent and aboveground pine biomass by 96 percent. Yet seedlings and saplings largely survived where infested trees were left untreated. Cutting treatments further reduced the sapling component, while hardwoods were mostly unaffected. The researchers combined forest measurements, carbon-flux observations and simulations. Their estimated recovery of leaf area to half its earlier level after three to five years did not mean the original mature pine forest had returned. Their case for mixed pine-oak stands concerned resistance to future disturbances, making forest composition part of the recovery story. Clark and colleagues, damage and consequences (2020).

Damage percentages apply to the research stands, not all Pinelands trees. Historical survey estimates and modeled carbon outcomes retain their different meanings.
