Shenandoah breaks free at Lakehurst (1924)

A winter gale tore the airship from its mast, damaged its nose, and helped end a proposed Arctic expedition.

The mast failed to hold

Lakehurst’s mooring mast was a 165-foot tower with a rotating head. The airship could turn with the wind, receive supplies while outside the hangar, and take crew aboard through its nose. The Smithsonian describes how strong winds nevertheless tore Shenandoah free in 1924. Its crew regained control, and more than 400 ground workers helped bring it down the following day. The journey that never happened

Rear Admiral William Moffett had proposed using Shenandoah for Arctic exploration and weather observation. President Calvin Coolidge approved the idea. The Navy’s history connects the January accident and necessary repairs with the abandonment of that expedition. Repairs finished in May; the airship returned to equipment trials and fleet work.

The damaged nose therefore marks more than an isolated mishap: a New Jersey winter storm interrupted a planned voyage into the Arctic. Shenandoah survived this accident. Its fatal breakup occurred over Ohio in September 1925, after another departure from Lakehurst. Navy ship history, 1924–25.

Sources and research limits

The institutional accounts agree on the breakaway, safe recovery, and repairs. The Arctic proposal’s planning papers would show how far preparations had advanced before cancellation; the summaries do not establish that every logistical obstacle had been resolved.
