Sharp was found near the home of Smith’s mother, Lottie Dodge. County Detective Chief Lawrence T. Doran and Corporal Joseph Camp of the Haddon Heights state police barracks first suspected foul play. They later concluded Sharp went there intending to kill Smith, found her absent, and shot himself.

Smith told investigators that Sharp had threatened her as recently as Sunday and had shot her during a February quarrel at his Philadelphia home. The fatal bullet reportedly matched five cartridges remaining in the nearby pistol and ammunition in Sharp’s pocket. Prints on the pistol were too blurred for comparison. After Holt’s ruling, Raymond Sharp took the body to Philadelphia; funeral arrangements were not announced.
