Scotland Run Park: a nature center at the Maurice River headwaters

Documented landscape · Public county park

Wilson Lake and the woods around it offer an easy starting point for a larger story: Pinelands streams leaving Gloucester County and joining the Maurice River system.

Follow the water outward

Gloucester County describes Scotland Run Park as its largest county park, covering more than 1,200 acres, with an 80-acre Wilson Lake. The lake invites a short visit for fishing or paddling, but the water has a much wider route. Citizens United to Protect the Maurice River's watershed guide explains that Scotland Run and Still Run join at Willow Grove Lake to begin the roughly 50-mile Maurice River. These headwaters drain the southwestern Pinelands toward the Delaware Bay. A shoreline stop at Wilson Lake can therefore serve as the beginning of a watershed exploration, with each stream connected to places much farther downstream.

Two ways into the park

The county's nature-trail map shows a web of named paths around the Nature Center, including the Cedar Grove, Moss and Holly trails, plus a perimeter route. The park's separate lakeside area offers a boat launch, fishing pier and accessible fishing pier. These entrances make for different visits: the center and its forest trails for a close look at plants and animals, or the lake facilities for open water and shore birds. The map is a trail plan, not a guarantee that every path is dry or accessible on a given day. Gloucester County, park facilities.

The Nature Center links the outdoors to local research. Gloucester County says its 2019 renovation replaced an older artifact and taxidermy display with exhibits including live native animals. County naturalist Daniel Duran leads public discovery walks; Rowan University describes the park as a place for its environmental-science field coursework. That pairing gives a practical way to explore the woods: bring a field question, make an observation on the trail, then use the center's exhibits or a guided walk to learn what it means. Plan the visit

Use 980 E. Academy Street, Clayton, NJ 08312 for the Nature Center and its parking. Gloucester County lists the park as open from sunrise to sunset except its published holiday closures; the Nature Center has shorter hours, so check the current page if indoor exhibits are central to your trip. Download the county trail map before hiking. The lake and trails are public park visits; guided paddles and other programs have separate registration requirements.
