An engineering survey preserves how a hand-operated bridge worked, while later records document its replacement.

Road traffic stopped so water traffic could pass

The state’s historic bridge survey describes a steel swing span built in 1904 by the New Jersey Bridge Company. A hand-operated capstan drove the gearing that rotated it around a central support. Twenty-three timber approach spans connected the movable crossing with land. This was infrastructure designed for both a road and a navigable creek. NJDOT historic bridge database, printed p. 67.

An old bridge already contained newer work

The survey records a 1952 increase in clearance and deck repairs after heavy-truck damage in 1985. Repeated rebuilding of timber approaches meant that the historic crossing was never simply an untouched object from 1904. Its authors reported that original plans had not been found at the county engineer’s office. NJDOT historic bridge database, printed p. 67.

Replacement, rather than a surviving swing span

A 2024 engineering awards account describes the replacement as a six-span plate-girder bridge, substantially completed September 22, 2023. It also records historical documentation and interpretive displays. The county’s March 2024 account confirms the new crossing. The older survey’s description of a surviving swing bridge must therefore be read in its historical setting. Sources and research limits

This is the Old New York Road/Smithville–Port Republic Road crossing, not the separate Route 9 bridge over Nacote Creek. The full replacement record and disposition of individual old components were not inspected.
