Four years of water measurements tested familiar visual clues in sandy soils.

Robert Zampella’s 1994 study compared soil morphology with four years of growing-season water-table measurements along a Pinelands upland-to-wetland sequence. The investigation asked whether recognizable horizons and colors consistently identified different hydrologic conditions in sandy pitch-pine landscapes. It tested the visual clues against repeated measurements rather than assuming that familiar-looking soil meant a familiar water regime. Zampella, soil morphology study (1994).

Some patterns held, others did not

Organic and surface horizons generally became thinner and lighter from wetter to drier sites. The thickness of the pale, leached horizon did not track water levels. Brightly colored subsurface soils occurred mainly at drier sites, but also appeared where saturation was frequent. Few of the examined features belonged exclusively to one hydrologic regime. A useful warning against one-clue classification

An isolated color or horizon could mislead without accompanying measurements. In this particular sandy landscape, appearances that suggested dryness could coexist with recurring saturation.
