Testing occupied homes

A field comparison published in 1999 examined eight pressure-dosed and eleven standard septic systems serving single-family homes in sandy Pinelands soils. The pressure-dosed design had been credited with better nitrogen removal, helping justify its use on smaller lots. Researchers followed nitrogen through the treatment profile instead of accepting the design assumption. Bunnell and colleagues, nitrogen comparison (1999).

Different averages, no demonstrated advantage

Average removal was 40 percent for pressure-dosed systems and 48 percent for standard systems; the difference was not statistically significant. Most removal occurred before wastewater passed through the upper fifteen centimeters of the sand fill. Deeper sampling showed little additional removal. The study did not establish that one design reliably outperformed the other under those field conditions. Bunnell and colleagues, nitrogen comparison (1999).

From assumption to monitored technology

The Commission subsequently convened an expert committee that recommended an alternate-treatment pilot in 2000. Its 2002 management-plan amendment established a program for evaluating advanced residential systems. The program’s official history describes consultation with engineers, manufacturers, health departments and other demonstration projects.
