Measuring the forest fuel between the ground and the canopy

Laser surveys tested how much forest structure could be measured without cutting and weighing every plant.

A helicopter above the Pines

In April 2004, researchers mounted an inexpensive, single-beam laser system on a New Jersey Forest Fire Service helicopter. Their survey crossed roughly 2,500 square kilometers of the Pinelands, with additional intensive sampling areas. The resulting 2007 paper compared laser measurements with field measurements of canopy height and biomass. Skowronski and colleagues (2007).

Scale changed the strength of the result

Across pooled forest types, one laser-height measure explained much of the variation in canopy height and biomass. Relationships were weaker within individual upland forest types. Vertical measurements also distinguished shrub and ladder-fuel patterns in burned and unburned areas. A useful regional relationship therefore did not automatically produce equally strong predictions within every stand. Skowronski and colleagues (2007).

Later scanners brought the question down to the shrubs

A 2025 Forest Service research account describes terrestrial scanning in twenty-seven New Jersey plots. Researchers compared estimates using different numbers of measured shrubs. Very small samples performed poorly; improvements were substantial between ten and twenty shrubs, with smaller gains beyond twenty. The question had become how to collect enough ground information to make laser estimates dependable without unnecessary fieldwork. Forest Service laser-scanning research (2025).
