The thinned forest with fewer questing ticks

Paired forest plots tested how changing vegetation affected ticks seeking a host.
Weekly checks in contrasting plots
Researchers sampled three pairs of thinned and unthinned forest plots during 2021. The study, published in 2023, compared vegetation, microclimate, host-seeking ticks and selected pathogens. Thinned plots were warmer and drier, supplying a measurable environmental contrast rather than relying only on the label of managed forest. Brennan and colleagues (2023).
A large change in captures
Average questing tick abundance was 92 percent lower in thinned plots. Unthinned sites supported several tick species; thinned sites yielded mainly lone star ticks and only one blacklegged tick. That single blacklegged tick nevertheless tested positive for Borrelia. Ehrlichia prevalence among lone star ticks did not differ significantly between treatments. Brennan and colleagues (2023).
Abundance is one part of exposure
The comparison supports a link between forest structure and the ticks encountered while sampling, but not a matching 92 percent reduction in human disease. It did not measure human infections, and lower abundance did not eliminate pathogen detection. The result concerns host-seeking ticks within a particular management comparison and sampling period.
