Preserved specimens allowed researchers to investigate a less visible part of the stream food web.

A collection answers another question

Researchers examined 514 fish from six Pinelands streams for internal worm parasites. The fish represented seventeen species with different regional distributions. Published online in 2006 and in print in 2007, the study found eighteen parasite species and infection in 78 percent of the examined fish. Those figures describe this collection, not all fish in the region. Hernandez, Bunnell and Sukhdeo (2007).

The food web changed with the watershed

Parasite diversity was greater in streams draining more agricultural and developed land. It correlated with pH, conductance and surrounding land use. Native pirate perch frequently carried more of the common parasites. The findings complicated any simple division between healthy native fish and parasite-bearing newcomers: host identity and the stream community both mattered. Hernandez, Bunnell and Sukhdeo (2007).

An additional use for earlier fieldwork

The Commission’s review explains that a Rutgers graduate student identified parasites from its existing fish-specimen collection. Samples gathered for watershed surveys thus supported a new investigation. The result illustrates a practical value of keeping reference material: a collection assembled to identify fish could later help reveal interactions hidden inside those fish. Sources and research limits

Land-use associations do not isolate one causal mechanism. The original specimens and complete laboratory records were not examined.
