Why the wooded watershed did not guarantee low mercury

Fish-tissue surveys complicated the assumption that a forested setting must mean a lower contaminant burden.
The contrast appeared in sampled fish
A New Jersey research summary compared mercury measurements from 1992–1993 and 1996–1997 surveys. Fish from Pinelands waters generally contained more mercury than comparable species from outside the region. Sites near the regional boundary varied, as did sites in industrial areas. The report explicitly says those data could not establish a time trend. The surveys showed a range of concentrations and differences among locations and species, rather than a controlled repeat measurement of identical fish. The water’s chemistry mattered
DEP’s later environmental-trends assessment brings together records extending from 1972 to 2018. It again reports generally higher mercury concentrations in the Pinelands fish groups analyzed. Low pH and dissolved organic carbon help explain increased formation and accumulation of methylmercury, making water chemistry part of the story alongside contaminant sources. The later assessment also notes incomplete information about fish size and sex, both potential influences on tissue concentrations. This account therefore describes the history and interpretation of monitoring.
