The microscopic stream indicators that resisted a simple score

A two-year diatom survey found useful land-use signals alongside important limits to interpretation.

Four kinds of watershed

Researchers surveyed diatoms in fourteen streams during 2002 and 2003, comparing forested watersheds, active and abandoned cranberry agriculture, and basins with development or upland farming. The 2007 study identified 132 taxa. Its question was whether these microscopic algae could indicate the effects of surrounding land use on acidic Pinelands streams. Zampella, Laidig and Lowe (2007).

Composition carried the signal

Species richness did not differ significantly among the stream classes. Assemblage composition did: acid-loving forms characterized forest and cranberry streams, while taxa less associated with acidic water were more prominent in the developed and upland-agricultural group. Differences in pH and conductance accompanied that pattern. Zampella, Laidig and Lowe (2007).

An indicator requires a dependable interpretation

The investigators also found substantial differences between years. Most taxa occurred rarely and in low abundance. Difficult identifications and incomplete information about species’ pH preferences complicated interpretation. Their results supported studying diatoms as indicators while cautioning against turning a single sample into an unquestionable verdict. The challenge lay in knowing which organisms were present and what their presence reliably meant. Zampella, Laidig and Lowe (2007).
